“Again and again, studies have shown that talking with strangers can make us happier, more connected to our communities, mentally sharper, healthier, less lonely, and more trustful and optimistic.”
(The Surprising Benefits of Talking to Strangers by Joe Keohane in The Atlantic)
Open Tables is a project of the Mecklenburg Metropolitan Interfaith Network (MeckMIN) with the aim of building substantive relationships among diverse congregations through fellowship and food. Over tables (and recently over Zoom), people come together across lines of difference to share ideas and experiences about topics that matter through guided discussions.
In 2022, we are excited to participate in an Open Tables cohort with congregations of different faiths, races, and ethnicities. Currently, our cohort consists of Myers Park Baptist Church, Temple Beth-El, and Christ Church (Episcopal). By Zoom (until it is advisable to gather together for potlucks), MeckMIN will supply a series of guided discussions, dialogue guidelines, and logistical support. In addition to the four discussion sessions, there are some OPTIONAL add-ons:
- Each time we gather, you’ll have the opportunity to get a coffee gift card to support meeting up one-on-one with someone you’ve met at the events.
- Participants can engage in a free training led by the national group Living Room Conversations to empower you to lead similar discussions in your own contexts.
- Participants will be invited to culminate the year together with a shared service project coordinated by MeckMIN.
- By meeting together over the course of the year, we’ll develop deeper relationships and greater understanding allowing us to love and be loved by our neighbors.
This is a 4-session partnership. The expectation is that you will participate in all 4 sessions and leave having built community with others across different backgrounds.
An open and eager mind is fundamental for learning. We encourage a commitment to honor difference and dissent, while honoring the human dignity of all.
